BSA TRAINING

Boy Scouts of America does not currently have a standard training program for Scout Leaders. Training within the scouting program (with the exception of Philmont Training Center) usually comes from volunteer leaders who have children with special needs, or teach children with special needs. The best way to find out if training is available is to contact your council’s committee on scouting with disabilities. Recommended places for training opportunities:

District Level –      Roundtables (Talk to you district training chair)

Council Level –     Pow-wow or University of Scouting Course

   Council wide training course/presentation

National Level –    Philmont Training Center – Working with Scouts with Special Needs

NON-BSA TRAINING

Other training is available for working with children with special needs. Contact any of the following resources for opportunities:

  • Local School District Special Education Department
  • Local College with Special Education
  • National Special Needs Groups (see my resources page)
  • Local Intermediate Unit (IU) – These are agencies that work with children with special needs
