ABOUT THE CREATOR OF SPECIALCUBS.ORG

Christian.

My name is Christian and I am the creator of specialcubs.org. I am the father of 4 boys and 1 girl. 2 of my sons have special needs, one with ADD and the other with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. I live in the Pottstown, PA area. So I am familiar with what many parents of boys with special needs go through.

When I was younger I was a scout and my boys have also joined scouting. One is currently a boy scout and 2 are cubs and they all love it. I have been a cub scout leader for over 8 years. I have been den leader for each level, committee chair, and am currently pack trainer. 2 years ago I started a special needs program within my pack to prepare the leaders and actively welcome special needs boys into our pack. I have taught courses on special needs in scouting at the district level and at the University of Scouting. I have also acted as an unofficial special need contact for my district, talking with parents of boys with special needs and getting them linked up with a local unit.

In 2010 I attended Wood Badge training (one of the best experiences of my life) and based all of my tickets (projects) on Special Needs in Cub Scouting. All of that work has gone into this website so I can share it with the scouting community.

I created this website after finding that there was a lack of information and knowledge about how to work with scouts with special needs, especially for Cub Scouting. There were a number of people who have worked on it, but no easy place to get to it. I had to dig deep to find the resources, literature, policies, etc. So I have compiled as much of the information that I have found and added my own work to it to provide a single point resource for Cub Scout leaders and their families. I feel that scouting has been one of the best things to help my son with autism. Through scouting he has developed his social skills and abilities. He has achieved, shows pride, loves the program, and the pack openly accepts him as just another one of the cubs.

My Scouting Info:

Council – Cradle of Liberty

District – Continental (Cub Scout Roundtable Instructor)

Pack – 36 Gilbertsville Pennsylvania (Currently Pack Trainer)

Wood Badge Course NE-V 138 - Bear Patrol
